Due to the multitasking nature of Swiss machines, process synchronization is certainly one way to achieve productivity gains. The option of either synchronizing multiple tool posts on the same spindle , or on opposing spindles is a great way to lower cycle times and increase throughput. Here’s a three-part video series focused on Swiss screw making to help explain the benefits of thread whirling, back turning and broaching while taking into consideration CAM programming, tooling and machine specifications. Anyone out there running roller tip rockers and have noticed them being a little noisy? I’ve got Edelbrock RPM heads and stamped steel rockers with roller tips. Not a loud clatter like the valves are out of adjustment, but a tick. I’ve re-adjusted the vavles twice so far to see if I can make it go away, but it doesn’t? It’s not an exhaust leak off the headers because I just replaced with new gaskets and and tightened and re-tightened the header bolts. I can even hear it over the rumble of the exhaust and idle, part throttle, and cruising speeds?? The Sailrite® Ultrafeed® LS-1 Sewing Machine is the best straight-stitch, portable walking foot sewing machine in the industry.
Some hobbyists successfully run a mild-spec solid-roller camshaft on the street without issue. In those instances I recommend occasionally checking valve lash to ensure it hasn’t deviated from the original setting, which may signal abnormal wear. If lash is within spec, it’s unlikely that you’ll encounter any significant issue as long as the valvespring pressure doesn’t degrade. For a competition engine, I highly suggest inspecting the lifters seasonally. Most lifter manufacturers offer a rebuilding service where the lifters are thoroughly inspected and repaired accordingly at a very reasonable cost and in a timely manner. Sims Performance Machining developed a new camshaft retainer that’s fitted with Torrington bearings.
We ensure that each product is further tested in our quality control division to attain desires performance and dimensional accuracy. Finally each product is packaged within safe packaging units, protecting each component from damage or mishandling. Flat tappet cams have a rearward thrust because of the lifter taper. So it is fair to say factory cam gears were designed to rub on the block face. Due to the lobe bevel, Flat Tappet Lifters keep the cam centered and prevent walking. All Chevys will walk a Roller Cam forward due to the angle at which the lifter bores are machined. Clean your machine and make sure there is no buildup of lint under the bobbin. Use good-quality thread, and make sure the tensions are properly set. Is ”f” for forward stitching and ”r” for reverse stitching?
This article provided a review of thread rolling including the machines used, production rates, materials, pitch diameters, and machine speed and feed rates. Learn more about threads and threading from the Machinery’s Handbook, 30th Edition, which is published and available from Industrial Press on Amazon. Screw threads may be formed by rolling either by using some type of thread-rolling machine or by equipping an automatic screw machine or turret lathe with a suitable threading roll. The thread-rolling process is applied where bolts, screws, studs, threaded rods, etc., are required in large quantities. Screw threads that are within the range of the rolling process may be produced more rapidly by this method than in any other way. Because of the cold-working action of the dies, the rolled thread is 10 to 20 percent stronger than a cut or ground thread, and the increase may be much higher for fatigue resistance. Other advantages of the rolling process are that no stock is wasted in forming the thread, and the surface of a rolled thread is harder than that of a cut thread, thus increasing wear resistance. However, when parts are produced in larger quantities, single point threading’s versatility is less beneficial.
The ZZ4 has an inherently noisy valve train even though it has hydraulic rollers. I have heard some ZZ4 engines that are a bit quieter than others but generally they sound like a sewing machine. I’ve tried different preloads and nothing really changes the sound. Just Google ZZ4 valve train noisy and you will see how common this is. One of the final steps of Swiss screw machining is cutting an often polygonal shaped internal drive feature on the back of the screw head. This drive feature is what later houses a hex or Allen wrench to tighten the screw. To avoid any internal radii in the corners of the drive feature , a common technique used is broaching. Rotary or wobble broaching is an efficient method for cutting these types of polygonal shapes. The cutter and spindle are synchronized, allowing for a single operation to create the finished shape. Back turning can not only provide more clearance when machining past a larger diameter, but can also introduce other benefits to the process.
Solid-roller cams provide the greatest potential for peak performance, but until recent years, reliability was a serious concern. Not enough valvespring pressure for the application can cause the lifter to bounce, resulting in a similar consequence. Roller timing sets are commonly used during Pontiac V-8 rebuilds. High-quality units like this from Sealed Power (number-CTS-3112R) include durable sprockets and a high-quality roller chain with dual rows that resist excessive stretching. The crank sprocket generally includes more than one keyway, which can be used to slightly advance or retard the camshaft to improve performance. The set sells for about $150 and is quite suitable for mild to moderate performance builds.
Limits imposed on the shape of the cam working surface by the choice of follower type. If you’re unsure about the programming part of all this, you’re in luck. Several tool supplier websites have G-code calculators to generate the necessary toolpaths for thread milling. (Most CAM systems are capable of this as well.) When rigid tapping, use whatever M code is specified in the machine’s programming manual. Be sure to use a G84 or comparable tapping cycle—don’t use a G01 or G81 command, unless you enjoy breaking taps. BIG KAISER’s MEGA Synchro drives taps securely and compensates for the small synchronization errors common with many CNC machine tools. These machines are also supplemented by a number of different auxiliary materials, conveyor belts, turning stations, packaging machines or industrial robots to help increase the productivity of a facility. Even these machines are available in large numbers and in great condition on the used machinery market.
Superior uses both two- and three-die cylindrical thread-rolling machines. Superior’s four massive Reed machines can roll threads with diameters ranging from 5/8 inch to 5 inches. Unlike on a lathe, single-point threading is rarely if ever performed; it is too time-consuming for the short cycle times that are typical of screw machines. A self-releasing die head can rapidly cut or roll-form threads on outside diameters. A non-releasing tap holder with a tap can quickly cut inside diameters but it requires single spindle machines to reverse into high speed in order for the tap to be removed from the work. Small- to medium-sized cam-operated automatic lathes are usually called screw machines or automatic screw machines. These machines work on parts that are up to 80 millimetres (3.1 in) in diameter and 300 millimetres in length.
Modernization continued and in 1908, the first large overhead crane was installed. As modern electric motors came on the scene, the steam engines that powered our line shafts became a thing of the past and electricity became the new source of power. I just took out a hydraulic flat tappet and now I’m putting the roller in. As you can see it’s very easy to get confused with different options, thicknesses, etc. Since this is my first roller install it would be nice for it to be as simple as possible. I know I need something between the top timing gear and block to keep the cam gear from rubbing on the block. I can also get a separate torrington bearing that I put behind my gear, but it says I may need to do some machining/grinding to get it to fit. I can also get a thrust plate/wear plate that fits behind the timing gear. I’ve read alot of people don’t like Torrington bearings because of the problems they will cause if they fail. I already have a new timing chain set, it would be nice if I can keep it.
A once common, but now outdated, application of this type of cam was automatic machine tool programming cams. Each tool movement or operation was controlled directly by one or more cams. Instructions for producing programming cams and cam generation data for the most common makes of machine, were included in engineering references well into the modern CNC era. All CNC machine tools are automatic, but the usage in the machining industries does not routinely call them by that term. The term “automatic”, when it is used at all, still often refers implicitly to cam-operated machines. Thus a 2-axis CNC lathe is not referred to as an “automatic lathe” even if fully automated. The term “automatic lathe” is still often used in manufacturing in its earlier sense, referring to automated lathes of non-CNC types. The first automatic lathes were mechanically automated and controlled by cams or tracers and pantographs. Thus, before electronic automation via numerical control, the “automatic” in the term “automatic machine tool” always referred implicitly to mechanical automation. This ensured that the weight dropped at a precise moment, enabling accurate timing. This was achieved by the use of two snail cams mounted coaxially with the roller initially resting on one cam and the final solid follower on the other but not in contact with its cam profile. Thus the roller cam initially carried the weight, until at the final portion of the run the profile of the non-roller cam rose more than the other causing the solid follower to take the weight.
